Democracy. Period? (International New York Times)
MADRID — This week a video went viral in Spain. It shows an unidentified man and woman standing in an empty room while a futuristic, techno-inflected beat zaps behind them. They stare at the camera with toothy smiles and declare that they are holding a “press conference from the future.”
Then comes the announcement: “Party X, the party of the future, has already won.” What has it won? they ask. Like everything else in the video, the question is rhetorical. And the answer is emphatic but dubious: “Everything,” including high-minded reforms like “direct democracy” and “government transparency.”
As the video says, “Democracia y punto” (“Democracy, period”) is what Party X is after.
